Amity University Gwalior Organises Second Lecture of Popular Lecture Series on Biotechnology

Amity Institute of Biotechnology, Amity University, Gwalior organised the second lecture of the Popular Lecture Series on Biotechnology, sponsored by DBT, New Delhi on 30th Oct 2014. Prof. (Dr.) R. S. Tomar, HoI AIB & Dean Academics, Amity University, Gwalior delivered his talk on this occasion. The lecture was focused on the topic “Biotechnological Applications for Biodiversity Conservation”. Students of different schools actively participated in the lecture. In his lecture Dr. Tomar discussed about the biodiversity, its importance to mankind and the causes of its destruction. He emphasized on the impacts of loss of biodiversity on nature and discussed about various ex-situ and in-situ strategies for its conservation. During his lecture, he discussed bout the various national parks, botanical gardens and biosphere reserves of India. He also provided the information about the cryopreservation strategies for conserving the genetic diversity taking an example of Frozen Zoo. His lecture encouraged the audience to work in the field of conservation of biodiversity by controlling the causes of its destruction and by implementing the various conservation strategies. He discussed about the various biotechnological strategies of genetic improvements like breeding across sexual barriers for obtaining new improved plant and animal varieties like Flavr-Savr Tomato, Bt Cotton etc. Further, he emphasized on the participation of human beings in developing in Nature a secured and safe home for all forms of life. His lecture was followed by an open discussion, in which he interacted with students and discussed about the basic techniques of biotechnology like plant and animal tissue culture and their application in strain improvement and species conservation. Students gained useful information and quality moral values from Dr Tomar’s lecture.

The lecture ended with the proposal of Vote of Thanks by Dr. Raghvendra Kumar Mishra, Coordinator and Assistant Professor, Amity Institute of BiotechnologyAmity University Gwalior , Gwalior to Prof. (Dr.) R.S.Tomar for his informative talk.

Amity University Madhya Pradesh Organizes Melange 2014

Amity University Gwalior organized a party for the fresh students of 2014 ‘Melange 2014’ on 26 September 2014 from 5.30 PM onwards.Once the new students had been welcomed into the Auditorium with ‘Tilak’ and flowers, the programme for the evening began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp. The first performance of the day was in the form of a fusion dance wherein the Indian classical dance form blended harmoniously with the trendy hip hop of today. This was followed by the first round of Ramp Walk, wherein the boys and girls of I year stepped onto the stage in glittering attires. Ami Band performed twice, first with junior and then with the senior students. A highlight of the evening was a skit, staged by the students of ASCO. The dance performances – both solo as well as group- were much appreciated by the audience. Adding charm to the evening were the solo renditions of songs by members of faculty Mr Mohan Kantharia and Mr Sandesh Mahajan. The II round of Ramp walk and the Question Answer Round set the stage on fire. Ms Charu Wadhwani of BBA and Mr Kshitiz of BJMC were respectively chosen Miss and Mr Fresher of Amity University Madhya Pradesh amidst much fanfare and gaiety. The programme came to an end with DJ and Dinner.

The evening was graced by the presence of Lt Gen VK Sharma, AVSM (Retd), Hon’ble VC Amity University Gwalior, Mrs Sharma, Registrar, Dr Anil Srivastava, Directors, Dy Directors, HOIs and members of faculty and staff.

Amity University Gwalior Organizes Guest Lecture

Amity University Madhya Pradesh organizes
Guest Lecture on
"Value Based Technical Education and Research for Holistic Development of Society"

Dr. Ram Gopal, Former Director Defence Laboratory, DRDO Jodhpur delivered a lecture to the students of Amity University Gwalior on “Value Based Technical Education and Research for Holistic Development of Society” in the Seminar Hall on 24 September 2014 at 1415 hours. He stressed on the need to identify, develop and disseminate techniques by which engineering students and practicing engineers can be motivated to imbibe human values and appreciate their impact on technology development, professional ethics and human welfare. He focused on the creation of an awareness within the students of technical community that the technical skills and human values are essentially complementary.

The programme was attended by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Lt Gen V K Sharma, AVSM (Retd), Heads of Schools/Departments, faculty members, and students of Amity University. A vote of thanks was proposed by the convener of the programme, Prof (Dr.) Bikram K. Bahinipati, Dy. Director, Amity School of Engineering & Technology.

Amity University Gwalior Organized First Lecture of Popular Lecture Series on Biotechnology

Amity Institute of Biotechnology
Organises
DBT sponsored Popular Lecture Series
Lecture - 1

Amity Institute of Biotechnology, Amity University, Gwalior organised the first lecture of Popular Lecture Series, sponsored by DBT, New Delhi on 23 Sept 2014 in its campus at Maharajpura. Dr. Manoj Prasad, Senior Scientist, National Institute of Plant Genome Research, New Delhi delivered his talk to a large gathering of students including those from various schools of Gwalior . Dr Prasad’s  lecture was focused on Biotechnological Applications for Agricultural Development and Food Security in India.  He  discussed the recent findings of his research on foxtail millet. This crop was regarded initially as  a neglected crop but then emerged as a model system with rich genetic and genomic resources. He emphasized on the development of genomic resources at large-scale and providing unrestricted access to the research community. This would certainly accelerate molecular breeding for crop improvement. During his lecture, he  also discussed the crop’s potential a biotic stress tolerance and encouraged the audience to explore the respective molecular mechanism which would enable the generation of crops with improved stress tolerance. This can lead to ensure food security in the scenario of global climate change. During the interaction with students, he emphasized on morphology, structural and functional genomics of plant. He discussed the nutritional and medicinal properties of foxtail millet and mentioned presence of the higher seed protein, crude fat and minerals content. Further, he discussed the medicinal properties of germinated seeds for curing dyspepsia, celiac disease, weak digestion and abdominal food stagnancy.

On this occasion, Lt. Gen. V. K. Sharma, AVSM (Retd.) the Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, Amity University Gwalior, emphasized on the potential health benefits of Foxtail millet. He further the  motivated students for doing research on this crop for improvement in quality and yield.

The lecture ended with the concluding remarks by Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Singh Tomar, Head, Amity Institute of Biotechnology and Dean (Academics), Amity University, Gwalior. In his  remarks he emphasized on the development of better genetic engineering methods to enhance the productivity of Foxtail millet. This could be a model crop for arid and semiarid areas. He concluded with a  Vote of Thanks to guest speaker for his informative talk. The seminar was followed by interaction of students with guest speaker Dr. Manoj Prasad.
